| 214 | Anonymous | on visiting the duke the first time it was pure chance. when looking at her bow something strange... familiar even.. when the train passed it all became clear.. as a child traveling to birmingham i spent the time peering out to see "the ship" now some twenty years i was standing before her as if paying tribute...i have now become obssessed..and have spent hours researching... learning.. discovering... most importantly discovering i traveled aboard her.. as a child i traveled to the uk every six months .. i feel connected.. i would love nothing more than to see her float again.. maybe return to titanic quarter.. she dissapeared from my life twice.. now i have found her again lets not watch her dissapear for ever......... |
| 215 | Paul Linnert | we live in colwyn bay and recently visited the Duke of Lancaster and think it is discusting to let this ship get to the state it has, my partner and myself, among many others would pay to board this beautiful ship, it could be made as a tourist attraction to raise funds for restoration, why go to the trouble of concreating it in if there was no intention of doing something like that, we also think there should be a lottery grant made available to restore it to it's former glory. |

| 221 | james seddon | we've let so much of our heritage go to waste, lets save her! |
| 222 | S. Sweet | If any of you who've signed the petition are genuine about your offer of help to save 'The Duke' - then get on to www.dukeoflancaster.net
These guys are trying to organise a meeting of like minded people to discuss what can be done to save her and what she could be used for.
Come on - get out of your chair and do something.
You know what they say - When it's gone, it's GONE!!!! |
| 223 | helen | I love this ship, it needs to be saved! |
| 224 | Adam Mills | Very important to keep this ship intact and get it restored! shes one of a kind! |
| 225 | Robert Macartney | My Grandfather who will be 90 in Sept 2008 was Bosun on the Duke of Lancaster for her entire time in service! |
| 226 | Carly O'Hare | It could be made into something really unusual and special like a floating reastraunt, or even a pub! Why not make use of something and let other people have a use for it at the moment its sitting there doing nothing and to be honest in its current state it looks a eye soare! |
| 227 | david roberts | |
| 228 | zoe roscoe | i would like 2 c something good happen 2 the duke as it is a part of our history |
| 229 | Peter Gaukroger | I served on the Duke of Lancaster under Capt (black jack) Irwin & Jimmy Taylor Bosun, in the 1960s in my early seagoing days as a JOS & SOS on deck, many years later becoming a captain in command.
Worked both the Heysham - Belfast route and also Scottish & Continental cruises. A very happy ship with a good crew. she was kept clean and spotless and was the smartest of the three sisters, and one of the best looked after ship in the BR fleet.
Its shame to see her in such a state, its would be great if the money was available to move her, restore her and berth her at her home port of Lancaster at Luneside East quay below Carlise Bridge.
But I must be realistic, I think at least £5 million would be needed?
Regards
Peter Gaukroger |
| 230 | diane | i hope that one day this beautiful ship can be restored to full glory x |
| 231 | brian gibson | |
| 232 | ian smith | i have some great memories of 'the duke' from when i was a kid(aged 5,in 1979).
my grandparents took me to see the 'funship the weekend after it was docked at mostyn, and i remember being in awe of it.
for years now i have lived with my own young children and wife in connahs quay, flintshire, and frequently travel to the 'solitaire market' and grab a bargain.
everytime we go there i tell my young sons ''when i was your age i went on that ship''
they look a bit suprised, and stunned to think that the,,and i quote ''heap of scrap'' was once a glorious ship..
they believe me now,,,after i showed them the pics that are posted on this website.
i am glad that someone has finally got their act together, and are now trying to restore the ship back to it's former glory,,and i fully support the cause.
i'm sure that this petiton will do it's job,,and i sincerely hope that eventually i can relive the time when i was a 5 year old lad looking up at this glorious ship...SAVE THE DUKE OF LANCASTER!! |
| 233 | Gareth Morris | something needs doing
i am a delievery driver in north wales, and i spoke to a store man in the fabrics place next door and his words where "if i had a pound for everyone who asks how do you get to the ship, i'd be rich by now!!"
so why not get it looking slighly better - charge a few quid to have alook arond and then get on with restoring it! |
| 234 | Alex Naughton | I think it would be great if she could be saved and restored to operational condition to perform a role similar to that of PS Waverley but in her case she is a classic Railway owned Channel Packet. She could be based in the North West and cruise the coast of the British Isles and so on. So certainly potential.
I would not recommend that she is restored as a static tourist attraction though as that means taking up limited berths permanently and that will reduce support from local authorities. Much better to get her operational again if possible. |

| 245 | Adrian | This ship needs saving.Any info on whats happenin to it??? |
| 246 | Keith Briggs | During my National Service 1957-59, whilst based at Holywood, Nr. Belfast, I used the "Duke of Lancaster", "Duke of Rothesay" and "Duke of Argyll" to ferry me from Heysham to Belfast on numerous occasions. I have very pleasant memories of all three vessels and I think the last remaining "Duke" should be preserved and not not left as it is - rusting away. Best of luck to the petition - you have my full support. |
