'Down to Earth' is threatened with closure due to the proposed threat of fund removal by the City Council.
'Down to Earth' is a community farm and environmental education centre, receiving over 7,000 visitors a year, it is run mainly by volunteers from the community. The centre’s aims are to educate the public about farming, food and sustainable living.
School visits offer children practical hands on activities, teaching children about the environment in which they live. Presently it is more important than ever to teach children about nature in order to develop from a young age their love and respect for the world around them, let alone to teach them that carrots don’t grow in supermarkets!
It is not just school children who benefit; the centre works with vulnerable people in the community and helps the unemployed gain work experience, helping them on their journey to employment. The centre also has a recently created community garden for locals to use for growing organic vegetables.
Please help to save 'Down to Earth' by signing below.
The petition will be sent to Southampton City Council on 23rd January 2006.
Thank you.

I, the undersigned deplore the total cut in subsidy (£42,000) to Down to Earth being proposed to Councillors by City Council Officers. This cut would bring about the closure of a facility that is much valued by schools and the local community in Southampton. We call on our elected Councillors to firmly reject this option and instruct Council Officers to seek savings/cuts elsewhere if necessary. |
