Dru MarlandThe behaviour of the stewards and the policeman was shoddy. Shame on them, and on those responsible for them.
Krissie Pearse1, He had no right to ask for a gender recognition certificate. He could however have asked for a birth certificate. 2, Unless he would ask for a would ask for a birth certificate of ALL women entering the women's loos, potentially trans or not (after all, who can tell for certain? - nobody), it's discrimination under the sex discrimination act. 3, As those who would hold a gender recognition certificate hold the rights, responsibilities and protections of that sex, to refuse them entry to the facilities of that sex for not being able to produce that certificate is discrimination under the Sex discrimination act, regardless of points one or two above, and as such, the actions taken against these women simply trying to answer the call of nature (ie, refusal of entry) was completely illegal. The stewards should be reprimanded, as should the police officer involved - if not sacked. Certainly that police officer should no longer be allowed to function in an LGBT liason capacity, and the force he is part of should get sum proper training in application of the Gender Recognition Act 2004. Somebody needs to have strong words with the organisers to ensure it can happen never again.
Grace HunterDisgraceful - I am appalled that this was allowed to happen.
Michael DCwhat was most shocking to me beyond the lack of diversity training of the toilet attendants was the trenchant attitude of the (off duty) Police LGBT liaison officer that a Gender Recognition Certificate be required to use the correct facility! Writing law on the hoof to get an easy result. When I asked him, he did not have a calling card on him, he said.
Christina AlleyIt was an extremely shocking and hurtful experience for Roz and all of use who rallied to her support. I was one of the 'bunch of trannies' (as the steward referred to us) who came to Roz's side in support. I was pushed into a barrier which collapsed, threatened with arrest and insulted. In the end, Both Roz and I were apologised to and the misguided, immoral and illegal policy was reversed. There is much to say about the incident, which was wrong on so many level. Needless to say, the wheels are in motion to educate the parties involved and to petition the relevant authorities and organisations implicated to prevent such abuses of human and civil rights from occurring again. Quite right too!

Sarah BrownI *am* one of the organisers of the 2008 event, being on the TransAtPride committee, and I am seriously contemplating boycotting the event next year unless there is a full apology from both Pride London and the Metropolitan Police, and a commitment to diversity training for those involved in stewarding and policing this event,.

Sarah GoslingI am staggered that this can happen with "officials" at a GLBT rally given the apparent "protections" offered by the Gender Recognition Act. The GLBT aware police officer should be dismissed for total failure of duty.
Kimberly Hyatt-WallaceOne more reason we need a divorce from the GLB population
AnonymousMy God.... Such behaviour from any organisation is barbaric/old fashioned and about 15 years out of date. To say that organisation was PRIDE ...well.. I am sorry but words escape me. I am not usually speechless!!!! I am years 2 years post op and 3 years since I transitioned. I have never been asked to use disabled toilets at ANY time by any organisation. I am disgusted by this news.
AnonymousI am a trans woman. I live 100% as a woman. I 'pass' 100% I am disgusted at your bigotry! Yours, Zophya

Anna-Jayne MetcalfeI am quite frankly stunned that such an incident could happen at a pride event. Those officials involved in this incident showed a disturbing lack of sensitivity and judgement. They need to be educated, and we need to be assured by the Pride organisers that this will NEVER happen again. At the very minimum, a personal apology form the organisers and officals concerned is in order. Pride - it's time for you to show us the same support we've regularly given non-trans GLB people. Rest assured that the trans community are watching to see whether you can rise to the challenge.
BethShame on the organisers that such an act can occur with such a basic lack of understanding towards people in a pride event against discrimination.
Jami BantryI am appalled that this could happen. It is unforgivable that at an event, where is everyone is happily celebrating pride in oneself, the local authorities oppress that celebration of pride, for "certain" people. How would the individuals, who are among the "authorities" feel, if such a thing happened to them. "You are allowed to take care of a basic bodily function in THAT room, NOT these, because you are wearing that uniform." "You cannot drink from that fountain, you have to use THAT one over there, because you are wearing that uniform." It is as if "certain" Human Beings are "officially" designated as being less than Human, or seen as being afflicted with a highly contagious disease. Trans Human Beings do not have any desire to hurt anyone (physically or emotionally); we are among the most empathic, compassionate people in the world. One day, I hope before I die, I will be able to experience true acceptance for all Human Beings, as equals. It seems that there is a strong need for education/training of these "authorities" to see Human Beings as Human Beings, without any preconceived notions about any individual Human Being. Every Human Being is unique/special, and we each expect/demand to be treated as such. "All you need is Love; Love is all you need." (if you write it, say it, feel it every moment, you live it) Jami Bantry

MICHELLE KERNICKThis was totaly unacceptable and should not be allowed to happen again. The police officer involved should be made to resign as LGBT liason officer because he obviously is not capable or understanding of our needs.

Jayne Louise Carter B.Sc. Hons PGCEThat this had to occur to one of the very people that Pride is supposed to represent is utterly revolting. I hope that the people involved in causing this incident feel thoroughly ashamed of them selves. Pride officials and The Police should know better than this. I am very disappointed.

Veronica SpangYour discrimination against Transgender persons will be a key deterrent to prevent my visiting your country. As a full time preop TransGender Female, I have partially completed the process, electrolysis, Hormone Therapy, and I have no problem using either restroom, the danger(s) associated with my use of a men's room are significant since the amount of proceedures that I have had leave me appearing VERY female. My experience has been that what you are doing will serve to upset the men present when I do use the potty. I could really care less who is upset, except that this places my life in danger. Are you really THAT lacking in common sense to realize that gender is not a black and white line, but a VERY gray one? If we have gone to significant steps to at least appear in our chosen gender then your current policy of seeing legal documents will only serve to endanger people and create hostility. And who will suffer in the violence? The transgender person. May history reveal your bigotry and discrimination with the same disdain as segregationist, racist, and sexist. For is gender discrimination any better?

Christine BurnsRos Kaveney transitioned and was using the Ladies without incident before most Pride-goers were even in nappies. It is a sad day for Pride London that such a crass thing could ever have occurred and the organisers must not be permitted to pass the blame for this to everyone else. Ros is owed a grovelling apology from the top and there must be a committment that all Pride stewards will in future be properly trained. Unfortunately just being LGB appears to be no guarantee of education in this area.
Tracy DeanIt is time that policemen learned what the law really is - they have no excuse for ignorance.

Elaine KennyWho honestly believes this isn't blatant discrimination? And from those who are supposed to be protecting people? I had heard of rampant fundamentalism amongst the Metropolitan police (e.g. repeated stop and searches without cause), now we have concrete proof.
Joyce Carter
Helen CormickThis discrimination needs to be legally tested.
Sandra RobinsonI did not attend the Pride this year, but I was compleatly outraged to read about this

Angela ElliottWhy didn't someone ask the police liason officer to drop his trousers and prove he was really a man? What arseholes the cops can be!
millie ashtonthe T is missing from LGB? in so many places such as Stonewall etc, we are being pushed away to fight our own corner!

Tamsin PiperThis incident would be a disgrace wherever it happened. That it occurred at an LGBT PRIDE event is unforgivable. The stewards and police officer should be ashamed of themselves.
