We, as family members of children that suffer from mental health issues are requesting the opportunity to choose what services are appropriate, what services look like, and how and who provides the services for our individual family needs.
Most of us have been “stuck” in various and multiple systems for years due to our children’s disability and the agencies inability to manage the high caseloads. Many of our children have slipped through the cracks until the situations became so volatile for our youth that they become involved with the juvenile justice system.
The Letter of Intent Bill Bane with the State received on October 15, 2004 from Mental Health Corporation of Denver and the Family Agency Collaborative is not in alignment with what “Family Focused and Family Driven” means.
Several families have attended meetings facilitated by MHCD to discuss the next steps for the Letter of Intent to the State. The letter requires 50% of the decision-making process to be made in collaboration between families & agencies. These meetings did not address the fundamental problems and collaboration in writing the Letter of Intent was a facade as families and the Denver Local Coordinating Council (LCC) were ignored.
The families have repeatedly made it clear we are not on board with MHCD's plan, and definitely do not support the path the facilitators repeatedly pushed for. In addition, we have requested mediation between families and the State on several occasions, simply to be dismissed. It is clear from the actions and insistence of MHCD representative, Ginny Treiwieler, on submitting “their” Letter of Intent without family review that realistically this is not about the families. This is about a select few agencies.
We therefore request The State and SAMHSA to keep the families at the forefront and maintain Cornerstone as an independent entity from any other agencies mandates. To continue forward with the work Cornerstone has successfully accomplished (according to the majority of families) within the last two years and have the opportunity to continue to empower family members to become strong and effective advocates for their families. We must create collaborations among the many systems each family often find themselves involved in. We request that this be done through acceptance of the Letter of Intent submitted by the Denver LCC.
While we recognize the attendant financial difficulties, we are confident that our government--which has proven itself adept at finding the money for many similarly useful programs in the past--will have no trouble finding the requisite resources.
This petition will be mailed (in snail and e format) to the State and SAMHSA by November 1, 2004. If you support our efforts to maintain Cornerstone with an independent Family Organization, serving youth who are both in and at risk for being in the juvenile justice system. Please add your signature below and your role, (for example “Family Member” in the Comments section), and please pass this on.
