On July 26th around 15,000 Ragbrai participants will descend upon the town of Algona, Iowa. In order to demonstrate that our town is the best stop on the tour, the residents must be able to give 100%. Unfortunately for us, the stop in Algona is on a Tuesday so many residents will have to work the next day. The impending doom of the following day is certain to stifle the efforts of many townspeople. If we can't assure these riders that we are there for them from the time they arrive, until the time they leave, how can they be expected to want to return. When considering the economic advantages of being a stop on the Ragbrai tour, it is in our best interest to insure a complete effort on the part of our townspeople. A day off on Wednesday will serve as changing a Tuesday into something of a Saturday. While not everyone will obviously be granted the day off, a proclamtion by the Mayor, backed by the City Council and a letter to Chamber Businesses from the Chamber would serve to encourage businesses that can to allow the day off for their employees. Only with Day Off Day in place can Algona prove it's devotion to the riders, appreciation to the workers, and superiority over the other stops on the tour. |
