'NEITHER PROUD NOR ASHAMED'
1959: Conrad Black was expelled from Upper Canada College after he was caught selling stolen exams to fellow students. Thirty-three years later in his autobiography, he explained the caper as his response to "sadist" teachers who ran an oppressive regime. "I am neither proud nor ashamed of what happened. It was an awful system whose odiousness was compounded by banality and pretension."
'SEVERE LIP-STRAIN'
1980: When a Toronto Sun columnist criticized him for abandoning troubled farm-equipment company Massey Ferguson to its creditors, he penned a venomous letter dismissing calls for a bail-out as "asinine," adding: "not that the Sun is a newspaper of record to anyone who does not suffer from severe lip-strain after half-a-minute of silent reading."
'SLOVENLY WORK FORCE'
1986: When workers at Dominion Stores protested a $30-million withdrawal of surplus funds from their pension by a Black-owned company, he snarled to the media, "We are not running a welfare agency for corrupt union leaders and a slovenly work force."
'OBDURATE RUMP'
1996: Lord Black complained to reporters that the directors of Southam Inc. were an "obdurate rump" when they rejected as inadequate an offer by one of his companies to buy some of the chain's newspapers. Two months later, when he gained control of Southam, the directors were replaced.
'COMMITTING ILLEGALITIES'
1999: In a television interview, Lord Black accused former prime minister Jean Chrétien of "committing illegalities" and "malicious" and "erroneous" actions when Canada blocked the press baron's British peerage on the grounds that an 80-year-old law restricted Canadian citizens from accepting foreign titles. Lord Black sued Mr. Chrétien, but the case was dismissed.
'JUMPED-UP LITTLE TWERP'
2000: In an opinion piece published in the Calgary Herald, Lord Black called Calgary Bishop Frederick Henry "a jumped-up little twerp" and "a prime candidate for exorcism" after he publicly sympathized with the paper's striking workers.
'TRULY EVIL PEOPLE'
2004: After he was ousted by a special committee of directors, Lord Black complained to potential investors in a letter that the directors and their adviser Richard Breeden were "fascists" and "truly evil people, who are a menace to capitalism as any sane and civilized person would define it."
'ONE MASSIVE SMEAR JOB'
2005: After he was criminally charged with eight counts of fraud by the U.S. Justice Department, Lord Black fired back at his accusers and told reporters: "This has been one massive smear job from A to Z and it will have a surprise ending - a complete vindication of the defendants and the exposure of their persecutors." |
