A Petition to the City Council, City of Bainbridge Island, Washington

“Community Priorities First”

We the undersigned citizens of Bainbridge Island believe that the city-sponsored redevelopment and upzoning planned for our downtown – estimated to cost over $100M taxpayer money– is inconsistent with our community values and priorities because:

> It jeopardizes our Island’s unique character and quality of life.

> It displaces funding for important community priorities across the Island for the foreseeable future (e.g., open space, public transit, bike lanes, road & infrastructure repairs and upgrades, affordable housing, trails, senior and community centers, etc.).

> It is fiscally imprudent and will likely result in a level of taxation that will force many current residents and local businesses off our Island.

For these reasons and more, we ask that our City Council:

1. Stop city-sponsored redevelopment projects and upzoning of our downtown including a parking garage off Madrone and increased building heights and density in the Winslow Core and Ferry/Gateway Districts.

2. Revise the Mayor's 2008 Budget and Capital Improvement Plan to support our community's true priorities, as determined in an open, informed, inclusive public process, and to be consistent with responsible long-term fiscal policy.
