We, the undersigned are in support of the EPAMD Bill as presented to The State Of Colorado House and Senate for the use of Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (Segway) on public right of way used for traffic. We recognize that proper rider training is essential when using these devices for personal transportation, where it is the express responsibility of the Segway Dealership to insure the concepts of safety and courtesy are properly relayed to users of this device.
There appears to be a slight misperception by some in the public of the positive characteristics that EPAMD devices offer as a unique form of transportation. This device is new to the market, and has been subjected to many tests by many agencies for its practicality. The results of these tests are extraordinarily positive in nature, to the extent that many agencies have voiced, “until you ride one, you cannot appreciate its performance values”.
The Environment – If 10% of all automobile trips less than 5 miles long transporting only one passenger were replaced with EPAMD, 6.2 million gallons of fuel would be saved per day or 2.26 billion gallons of fuel per year.
Efficiency – EPAMD units are notably efficient. Capable of carrying only one rider, efficiency comparison of fossil fuel vs. electric propulsion is equal to 460 miles of travel using the EPAMD unit. EPAMD units enable companies to forego the use of under-utilized vehicles, and the associated ownership and operational costs that accompany them.
Business Use - Initial feasibility studies conducted by customers show double-digit productivity gains. EPAMD units increase worker mobility, enabling them to travel short distances with less wasted time and energy. EPAMD units reduce the strain of repetitive tasks and potentially will help avoid the costs of work-related injuries.
Police/Security – EPAMD devices are a favorite tool of police departments and security personnel. EPAMD units allow officers to increase their walking speed (3mph) to sprinting speed (12.5mph) immediately without causing alarm, triple the amount of area an officer can cover on foot, and facilitate conversations and create interaction with civilians. The units provide the rider with superior sight lines for traffic management, crowd control and community policing.
Recreation – EPAMD units allow pedestrian mobility without the fatigue associated with walking and hiking. This offers mobility to a medically challenged segment of the population having access to activities that they could normally not enjoy. |
