To Chicano Studies, scholars, professors, students, graduate students, community organizations and supporters:
University officials at California State University, Channel Islands is considering to retract on the agreement to establish a BA Chicano Studies Program for fall 2006 at California State University at Channel Islands (CSUCI). Cal State Channel Islands is a new CSU school that was formed in the Oxnard Plains area in 1999. The population within the Oxnard Plain is majority Mexican and Latino working class people and has a rich history of being a farming community.
Recently, a CSUCI Task Force has made a recommendation to establish a B.A. program in Multicultural Studies. The goal is to retract the already planned Chicano Studies BA Program and capitulate it into the “Multicultural Studies” Program.
Several community and Task Force Members do not want to continue the development of an independent B.A. Chicano Studies Program and will recommend, most likely, dissolving the current track of development.
We support having a B.A. Chicano Studies Program at CSUCI. We need your support! We call on all Chicano Studies professors, scholars, students, graduate students, and community organizations and members outside the area to SIGN ONTO OUR ONLINE PETITION TODAY!
SUPPORT THE CHICANO COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND HISTORY! SUPPORT CHICANO STUDIES!
