Anne Trudeau | Portland | OR | 97211 | I would love to drive down Chavez Blvd. in Portland, to tell my daughter all that Cesar did for farmworkers, to talk about marching with the farmworkers in 1975 and not eating grapes for years when I was a child. This would be a small honor for a great man.

Trudy Cooper | Portland | OR | 97212 | I support the proposal, and I support Council's efforts to raise funds to mitigate the impacts on area businesses, that will have to spend new money to change advertising and other materials from "interstate" to Cesar E. Chavez. Proposals that have negative impacts on consitutuents often operate at cross purposes to the real goal--acknowledgement of the contributions of the diverse leaders and citizens in this country. I hope you will do all you can to address all interests fairly, as this change is implemented. I hope you will also do all you can to support people in looking at this issue in all its complexity, rather than resort to name calling. To some degree, the Council was inadvertantly responsible for the tense outcome of the first meeting on this subject.

Sheree Solario | Salem | Oregon | 97305 | I believe that this should be only the beginning of honoring Cesar Chavez. It would be wonderful to build a community center and have it named after him to represent his vision of community.

Stephanie Calvert | Portland | Oregon | 97217 | I'm sympathetic to business owners who don't want the extra expense of having to print new business collateral. Also, I'm not sure why North Portland is the only area of Portland "honoring" civil-rights activists. Nonetheless, I am in support of changing an anonymous name like Interstate Blvd. to one celebrating Cesar Chavez.
AMJ | Portland | OR | 97217 | I live over in Piedmont neighborhood http://www.portlandneighborhood.com/piedmont.html and am directly in the line of fire re: the recent street change and the proposed Interstate renaming. My neighbors are up in arms and personally, I don’t really care all that much. I do wonder, however, about the impact to the business owners. Who covers their expenses?
John McKee | Portland | Oregon | 97219 | Naming a street in honor of Cesar Chavez has profound meaning for all Oregonians. He was a great American who should be remembered as an important leader and role model for future generations.

Joel Campos | Portland | OR | 97203 | I too am a North Portland resident and I too have a saying in the renaming of Interstate Blvd. Nothing would make me feel more proud of my hispanic heritage than to see In terstae Blvd dedicated to a man whose legacy in this country has long been over due. He is worthy of representing such a large contingency of hispanics living and working here in Portland and contributing in every sense to this great nation. A nation of immingrants from all over the world. If we are to embrace diversity in this country like we say we are here in Portland, then let us show it. The commisioners have the duty to put in practice what they preach about being diverse and honoring the great diversity that exists here in Portland and elsewhere. It's about time people accept the fact that we Hispanicsa and other races are an integral part of this society and deserve to be represented in every single way. Let's put an end to disparity and begin to practice equaliy and honor those who have sacrificed their lives to make this nation a better one with liberty and justice for all. This is all about making changes in closed minded attitudes and prejudices and facing the reality that changes are a way of moving forward and not remaining stagnated in the past. "SI SE PUEDE" Thank you very much. Joel Campos
Cecil Charles Prescod | Portland | OR | 97212-2045 | This is an appropriate honor for a great American hero.
Anonymous | Anonymous | Oregon | 97202 | This is of enormous significance and I support it. The struggle still continues.
Lillian Grable | Portland | OR | 97220 | Cesar Chavez is not only a Latino leader, but an American leader of all working class people in this country. Portland is a city which claims to take pride in it's blue collar roots and it's diversity, Chavez is an excellent person to honor both those values. I will hang my head in shame if I am a citizen of a city in which someone whose moral character was a strong as Chavez's was is not able to be honored due to racial discrimination or the economic gripes of a few.
Molly Meisenheimer | Portland | OR | 97213 | I am embarrassed and appalled that Portland is debating whether or not to honor this man and everything he stood for. Is Portland really that closed-minded? Is Portland willing to continue the de facto racism that exists here? This could be a step in the right direction, rather than a solidifying of the negative, racist image that Portland has in this country. A friend from out of state called me recently to ask about the Nazi Skinhead rally we had here, THAT is what she knows about Portland. How about giving the country a different reason to know our name?
