268 norma L GarciaKeizeroregon97303I beleive there should be a street named after him, after all he tried to do for the migrant workers. Just as Martin Luther did for the people aslo.

274 Judith WildPortlandor97217Please rename Interstate Avenue to recognize the contributions of Cesar Chavez. As a resident of the Overlook neighborhood abutting Interstate avenue, I strongly support this proposal.

282 Kent SpringPortlandOR97217I live in North Portland, and I think that not only is changing Interstate Ave to César E. Chávez Boulevard a progressive move, but I know that it will make it far less confusing for those folks who think that Interstate means I-5.
283 Hector CobbPortlandOR97213
284 Bill BigelowPortlandOR97211This is an important issue. Below is a short piece I submitted to the Oregonian, after their Sept. 5 editorial on this issue: The Oregonian ["Slow down on Interstate," Sept. 5, 2007] claims that the name Interstate Ave. lacks poetry but is functional. I won't argue about the obvious lack of poetry, but as a name, Interstate is not even functional. I can remember being confused by the name when I moved here 30 years ago. Was Interstate a substitute for the freeway? Could I take it all the way into Vancouver? Was it perpendicular to the interstate freeway? Exactly what about this road was "interstate," anyway? So count me among those who would say good riddance to a confusing, lackluster street name. And how wonderful to name a substantial Portland thoroughfare after Cesar Chavez. As a teacher, I'd see it as a gift. A study of Chavez's life has so much to offer young people. His commitment to non-violence. His capacity to knit together different racial and linguistic groups. His dedication to people who had been marginalized and taken for granted for so long. His expansive vision of the labor movement -- that unions should be about social betterment. And as Portland struggles to embrace its new identity as home to large numbers of Latinos, what better way to announce our commitment to multiculturalism and anti-racism? So by all means, let's not rush to judgment on changing Interstate Avenue to Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. But let's do it. In his support for the change, New Seasons' Brian Rohter has it exactly right. He knows that his Interstate store is about to have the coolest address in Portland: Cesar Chavez Blvd. and Rosa Parks Way. Bill Bigelow Bill Bigelow is an editor with Rethinking Schools magazine. He has taught social studies in Portland at Grant, Jefferson, and Franklin high schools.

297 Hattie LarrouyPortlandOregon97213I have lived in Portland for over 25 years. I was raised in a small farming community in California in the 1950s-70s. Many of my friends were the children of farmworkers and I remember how much Cesar Chavez meant to these families. As a public health nurse I know that his work had a huge impact on the health and civil rights of many Americans. I would be happy to shop on a street named for Cesar Chavez.
298 Linda McKim-BellPortlandOregon97210My students need to know that their heroic Hispanic role models are honored and respected in this society so that they can feel that they belong and are respected as well. I am a retired ESL Bilingual and Migrant Teacher, retired from Portland Public Schools. I'm a third generation Portlander.
