Carriage horses may be a romantic part of the city, but their lives are far from romantic. Although the law states that they can’t work when the temperature is hotter than 90 F and colder than 18 F, these laws are rarely upheld. And humidity and wind chill are never taken into account. They are permitted to work 9 hour days, 7 days a week, through busy and dangerous New York City streets. They are never able to graze, roam, or interact with other horses. When no longer fit to work, or if they require medical attention, they are often sold to slaughter houses.
What we’re asking for is basic:
· Larger Stalls
· Shorter working hours
· Exclusion from work during dangerously harsh weather
· Medical attention when necessary
· A pasture for roaming
· Carriage rides restricted solely to Central Park
Please sign this petition, and we will send it on to City Council and Mayor Bloomberg.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Silverstein
