Dear Mr. Leonsis,
I feel, as many fans, feel grateful for the amount of time and effort you have put forth to make the Washington Capital organization a great one. Your credentials are impressing and you are a proven leader of business and spirit. I feel I speak for the fans of the Capitals when I say, I am a fan of yours.
However the matter that concerns me is with the spirit of the Washington Capitals. For as long as I can remember I have been an avid fan of the Capitals, attending games in the old Capitals Centre, and USAir Arena. I have continued to follow the team (as much as possible) while attending school in southern Florida at the Univesrity of Miami. I have always believed that one of the strongest parts of our organization was our location: in our nation's capital. It is a city of great and powerful leadership, as well as the living symbol of Americanism. When traveling to DC, feelings of great respect, awe arise and it is then an American understand what it is to be an American. Symbols that represent our great nation are also very powerful, as represented on the Capitals' jersey: the eagle, and the Capitol Building. However, they seem almost out of context; almost as if those feelings conjured from our symbols represented were half-fulfilled. Where is the red, white and the blue? Olympic atheletes have told the stories for ages about the overwhelming emotion and pride playing under the banner of their country, and being draped in their colors as the ultimate experience of victory. Though most of the players in the NHL are not US natives, their fans are, and the Washington Capitals fans are fans of "our nations captials", but they are not represented by the colors of the nation. I feel strongly and have expressed the notion that the Washington Capitals organization should consider reverting back to the approapriate color scheme of red, white and blue, while keeping the many approapriate features of the "new" jersey, such as those symbols noted above. I feel as though there may be many beneficial outcomes, including nostalgic ones expressed by many to whom I mentioned the idea. There may be beneficial financial outcomes as well by introducing a new jersey into the market, with a proven and storied color scheme that is more appropriate than the current one. Though it may be a long process and seemingly unfeasible, I hope this idea would be seriously considered as a starting point for getting this great organization headed in the right direction, representing our nation's capital, and playing as "our nation's capitals". |
