MY LIFE WITH ALS, BY MARC LEVISON,
I often wonder, “why me?” How can I not ask why? My day will come and I tell you this, I will overcome ALS. I see so many things different than others after living with this debilitating disease. I reach for the door, but I can’t open it. I go to stand up, but I can’t. I try to talk, but I am unable to form the words. When will it end? I want to put an end to the pain and suffering for the victims and their families by starting a research program at OSU Medical Center. I need your help in doing so. It’s time to say enough is enough. Don’t spend your time crying and telling me that you are sorry. We don’t want that. Start today and support ALS research with me.
There is so much to love and so little time to do so. I believe in you and a good world full of hope and dreams. If you see a star shining from far away we all think how far away it is, not how it got there. I believe that our place here on this earth is like that star. We know how we got here and there is no end how far we can go. I ask you today to make my day a star to shine for all to see.
What is ALS? It is a disease that attacks the body’s motor neurons, or nerve cells and proves fatal within an average of two to five years. As motor neurons are destroyed, a person with ALS loses his/her ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. Unless we do something, 300,000 seemingly healthy Americans living now will die from ALS. It is a fact that, if we solve the mystery of ALS, we can learn what we need to know about other devastating brain diseases including Alzheimers, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s, which afflict over six million people. To date, there exists not one effective treatment to improve the quality of life of someone of ALS. I am working to find and fun treatments and a cure for a disease that has been stamped untreatable for almost 150 years.
Its all about the big picture, think of all the people in wheelchairs with nerves diseases, ALS is just a little part of the big picture, take a place in my world, its not about me and you, its all about everyone and come out and run/ walk with me.
I always remember what my dad said to me before he died, “Be strong and be yourself always.” Everyone who knows me, recognizes that I am all that and more. I want to thank you all for giving from your heart.
Always,
Marc |
