1262 Amber HendricksMy son, Aiden, was born with Hypoplastic Right Heart. Luckily, he was diagnost in-utero. I was one of the "lucky" parents to have at least known in advance what we were up against. I hear way too many stories of babies being born and sent home to later return to the hospital via ambulance or flight for life because of a heart defect the parents knew nothing about. Too many children die because the life saving medicines were not given it time. This is such a simple test, I really cannot believe it is not already protocol. If these were your children, wouldn't you want it done to know you were taking home a healthy baby? I beg you to implament this simple but life saving procedure to ALL newborns. If it could save even ONE life, isn't it worth it? sincerly, Amber Hendricks, mom to the strongest 3 yr. old boy who is fighting a CHD and WINNING!!

1266 AnonymousI pray that we find a cure before another child becomes an Angel in Heaven.
1267 Kathy Van TineMy Son Robert had open heart surgery at 7 weeks old to fix a VSD(ventricular septal defect ) and an ASD(Atrial septal defect) His life was saved by early detection and skilled surgeons. I am so grateful that he had access to both.

1281 Diane ZookI work in the Pediatric Heart Center at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma, WA. We have recently received grant funding and IRB approval to implement a newborn screening program to identify congenital heart defects (CHDs) [incidence 8-10:1000 & prevalence 1.3-1.8M in US] in asymptomatic newborns, utilizing pulse oximetry testing (sensitivity 63-72%, specificity 99.8-99.9%). I hope to eventually see newborn screening for CHDs become mandatory nationwide, similar to newborn screening for genetic & metabolic disorders and newborn hearing screening. Pulse oximetry testing could be performed at 24-48 hours of age/prior to discharge from the hospital of birth. Ref: 1. Accuracy of pulse oximetry in screening for congenital heart disease in asymptomatic newborns: a systematic review. Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed. 2007 May;92(3):F176-80. 2. 1287 Amy LalondeWe were very fortunate that our daughter's heart defect was caught in-utero, as it is one that is often missed with ultrasound screening. We would have been home thinking that she was fine, and she could have died as a result. My daughter was lucky, but how many others will be as fortunate? Pulse oximetry testing could help countless babies!

1290 Lauren OsterhoutMy daughter was not diagnosed the CHD until a year after her birth. Thank God a vigilante pediatriction took the time to listen to her heart and take her blood pressure. This test would have prevented a year of pain and discomfort for our child.

1292 Michelle DaigneauI am the mother of a 3 year old baby girl named Emma Cathryn who was born with 2 congenital heart defects, a VSD and ASD. The ASD was only detected because her murmur from the VSD was heard during inpatient screenings shortly after her birth. If it weren't for a VERY thorough doctor sugegsting we have an echocardiogram done to check things out further,we would have never known about her atrial septal defect until possibly too late! This newborn screening is a VITAL piece to protecting all of our children and giving those with CHD's the best chance we can to have a healthy life... Please help this testing become standard practice to protect our babies!
1293 CheyenneChavezMy daughter has ASD and PDA. She had surgery when she was one - now she is almost 7. She is doing wonderful. Please keep up the research. It saved her life.
