The Iranian government’s pursuit of nuclear weapons poses a great threat to the United States and its interests in the Middle East. This Thursday, April 26, the Cornell University Student Assembly will consider Resolution 29, which would condemn Iranian nuclear proliferation.
Resolution 29 serves three purposes:
• Informs Members of Congress of Cornell students’ concern about nuclear weapons falling into the hands of a state sponsor of terrorism.
• Encourages the United States Government to peacefully resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis.
• Educates Cornell students about the grave threat posed by Iran’s attempts to acquire nuclear weapons.
Cornell’s Student Assembly has taken positions on issues of national and international concern before. In 2003, the SA approved a resolution opposing the war in Iraq. The “Resolution Regarding American Military Involvement in Iraq” passed by a vote of 15-6, indicating Cornell students’ concern about the issue. Four other student governments—University of Alabama, University of Arizona, Louisiana State University, and Brandeis University—have passed such resolutions, and student leaders at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida, University of Chicago, University of California-Berkeley, and Harvard University, as well as many other schools, have signed letters indicating their opposition to Iran’s nuclear weapons program. |
