The petition
(Walker County, Alabama):
Walker County is starting to consider seven periods instead of four blocks. I believe this to be distressing for all the unfavorable consequences that will ensue because of this probable decision.
Firstly, students (that have failed) that are now in tenth or eleventh grade WILL NOT have time to finish their credits to graduate high school, therefore causing said students to attend Summer School.
Secondly, there will be less time in class, making there also less time to finish work. More homework means more failing grades, assuming that the majority of students attending Walker County schools have a job or after school circulars.
Lastly this decision, if made, will cause disruption of schedules. This causes a lot of confusion and problems will result. The block system (four classes, or “blocks”, all year that allow you to take what would usually be an entire years course in one semester of classes. after the first semester, you will receive a new schedule consisting of four more classes until the year is over) works better than the period system (in this case, seven classes that last all year). The block system usually allows you to take all of your required classes early so that you may have more electives the second semester of school (another decision is to take electives during the first semester, and cram the second. Or, if you like, to mix the classes. This isn‘t necessarily your decision all of the time, but it is very much easier to live with). Usually, if you plan your block classes well, you will have an easier senior year so that you may prepare for graduation and focus on the costs of the future (such as college or your career).
If you agree with my views on the subject that the block system should remain in Carbon Hill High School, please sign this petition (opened March 24 2008).
Sincerely,
