In between trying to explain to them why some baskets are worth 2 points and some 3 points, why some free throws are two shots, some one and one, what is one and one..... All during this my parents KEEP ASKING WHY is the announcer, Billy Packer, rooting for Memphis. Even though they know little about basketball, it was obvious to them that the announcers seemed to be cheering for Memphis. I try to explain to them that the game is being broadcast worldwide and the announcers are not suppossed to be "for" either team. Then my dad wants to know why they keep replaying all the Memphis shots and raving about them and seeming to overlook what KU was doing. When the second half started, my mom said, "well, it looks like they're trying to say some nice things about the Kansas team now,"...I had to explain to her that they changed baskets and were going the other way...Oh. ...I guess they are still going for the Memphis team. I am biting my fingers off trying to follow the game and my parents keep asking me why the announcers are so against Kansas. When Darrell Arthur makes a great shot to cut the lead to 7 points my mom asks me why Billy Packer called it a bad shot. Then, after the time out, Sherron Collins steals the ball and because of CBS's lousy camera work you don't really get to see how INCREDIBLE of a play that was. Memphis is a great team, BUT, Memphis would have been the lucky ones to have won. Kansas was and is the better team. To me, there is a difference between a lucky shot and a great shot. D. Rose is a great player, but his bank two pointer was lucky. Mario's shot was great. Several times KU was called for traveling and after replaying several times, I don't think they traveled. Billy Packer was quick to call KU players for fouling or traveling, but he was so F******* bias. He overlooked and excused everthing the Memphis players did. I do think Memphis is a great team and I thought their players and coach showed class after the game, but, Kansas in my opinion, and I admit I'm bias, but I truley felt they were the better team the entire game.
I am used to Billy Packer being an idiot,but when my parents keep nagging me and asking me why the announcers are "against" Kansas, I found myself in the strange role of trying to calm them down. One basketball game with them has made me rethink all the arguments I've had with them about their perceptions of the "liberal" media. I realize now they are pretty smart. In one half of watching a game they don't really understand, it was obvious to them the announcers were for Memphis...not just "for" Memphis, but they seemed to almost degrade the Kansas team. My parents could actually "feel" the bias. I don't think Billy Packer gave Kansas the benefit of doubt on any call and he made excuses for Memphis all night long. If I were a Memphis fan I would be embarrassed, not by their very good team, but by having Billy Packer make excuses for you. Some announcers have personality quirks that can be aggravating, but I can deal with those. But, Billy Packer is a complete idiot. After Rose travels during the second half he says , "know the rules," What a f###### idiot. He doesn't know the rules...when he does, he applies them the way he wants.
The best team Monday night won. If they were to play another night, Memphis might win....but, Monday, Kansas was the best team. CBS should know that I will NEVER listen to a game that Billy Packer announces again.
I can not think of any major sporting event that has the absolute worst announcer call the most important game. Great game, terrible announcing. |

1. He regularly "mis" announces the game, as in he announces something that did not actually happen. Such as, "Oh great pass!" as the pass he is talking about is being stolen by an opponent. Or, "Oh that's gonna be a charge on so-and-so", as the referee is at the scorer's table calling a blocking foul on the defense. He has no problem announcing lies.
2. He is scared to the core to consider that people might NOT want to hear what he has to say. And his solution to this insecurity is to continue to fill the airwaves with his words, so that he doesn't have to consider the notion that what he has to say is not worth hearing. So the problem compounds itself and is continuous, because he is not honest enough and humble enough to consider that notion.
Lay it out in black and white to him, that he is to correct his arrogance and fundamental dishonesty immediately, or be removed from his position. Basketball fans have suffered from him long enough already. |

How long did it take him to realize that Kansas was in a (Box and One) They were in the Boxn1 for nearly 3 minutes before he announced it. Then made a comment how smart the Memphis guards were in discovering it....when they discovered it 3 minutes earlier.
and yes it's common basketball knowledge that the worst shot in basketball is when you have a toe on the 3 point line and you get 2 instead of 3 points. But when time is running out and you have to start taking shots it's not a bad shot.
And yes Billy did seem to favor Memphis during the game but I didn't like how he jumped on Calipari for making a bad decision not to foul before chalmers made the shot. Billy always jumps on people after the fact....when he knows the outcome.
I really think he believes he has a Higher BBall IQ when he states the obviuous.
I've always been disapointed when find out that Billy is the commentator on the games I watch....but after the Championship game I will never listen to him again. I will learned to hit the mute button.
Please put someone in there that knows basketball and won't annoy the heck out of us with mindless babble. |
