The petition

We are requesting you represent our cause to modify the current employee pre-screening background checks in our state. Modification of these practices are in need to enable those citizens with criminal backgrounds that have since rehabilitated their lives to enable them to seek gainful employment. The current practices in light of the easy access to past history has impeded those with such backgrounds from successfully obtaining employment in spite of their current stabilized productive proven lifestyle. We ask that you speak out on behalf of those individuals that have lived life as a productive citizensin spite of a checkered past.

Every company is now doing background checks on employees. Most states do not set standards on these checks. Many Americans are loosing jobs for bad decisions made in their youth and have paid for 20+ years ago. These laws should be modified to prevent employers from checking an employees background dating backwards passed 10-15 years. Consumer Reporting Laws prevent employers from checking credit history older than 7 years. Background checks should be the same with special considerations for National or State Security positions. If a person has cleaned their life up why some 15-20-25 years later are we still expecting these individuals to pay a price. What impact is it going to have on our society. They have done the work, paid the price and NOW we do not want them to remain employed and a functional part of our society, when they have proven their ability to transition into society and become a functional citizen. Where is the reasoning?
