The Boston University Grading Policy

851 VanLeichliterPAUSThis policy puts BU students at a significant competitive disadvantage vs. other prestigious universities, like Yale , which inflate their grades. A BU student , who is just as capable and qualified for a job or graduate school, will not get the position, simply because BU deflates their grades, and it appears that the BU student is less qualified than the Yale student. This grade deflation policy not only hurts present BU students, but the school as a whole because qualified students will not go to a school which does not grade their work product objectively, but uses students for the school's own alterior purpose.

857 DmitryKrasnopolskyDEUSI started out premed and the grade deflation caused me to transfer to University of Delaware after my first semester. It's not worth paying so much money for a school that does not reward you for your abilities. When a university wants their students to fail, the population will not succeed as a whole, and very few will succeed individually.

864 AnonymousAnonymousNYUSGrade deflation is not an adequate measure of academic prestige. Difficult and challenging curriculum makes the difference. How about setting up fair and transparent grading policy, increasing the level of difficulty of the exams and sort out the high acheivers from the rest in a clear manner. Faculty trying to keep their job by unfairly curving the grades is anticompetitive. There is no other organization that is allowed to be this unclear with their expectations. Boo BU!
865 PatrickPrioreCOUSI am presently disputing my grade with Boston University.

867 AnonymousAnonymousNJUSI'm a biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, and I'm currently in my first year at BU taking general chem and bio courses. Let me just say this, it's nearly impossible to get an A in these courses, or an A-. No matter how hard I or anyone I talk to studies, the time and effort we put in doesn't pay off, or seem to make the slightest bit of difference.
868 AnonymousAnonymousNJUSI am a student who is leaving BU after this semester. The only way I cant is if grades arent high enough to transfer. Sadly, the policy has me with a semester gpa of 2.8 despite working my ass off. My target transfer school basically said a solid B average will do it. Even that I never know about with this place. Also, the administration forces professors and TAs to defend this policy for them. The professors take the brunt of the complaints while the administration sits back and collects their money. Warning to prospective students, unless your a communications major avoid BU at all costs.

885 TriciaMonasterioMAUSI am a graduate of BU and just started my first year of law school at Suffolk University. I worked my butt of in undergrad, but managed to only scrape by with 'average' grades. I met someone in law school who went to a 'never heard of it' university in Minnesota and she is going to Suffolk with a very good scholarship. I looked into the University and they did not curve, so it made me wonder if we were equivelent as far as educational background and the inequity of her being more likely to attain a scholarship than myself. Suffolk Law too has a curve (B-). This realization frightens me since BU and BC law schools curve to a B and B+ respectively. Not only will their students graduate from a higher ranked law school, but they too 'on average' will be receiving higher grades than the average Suffolk Law student!!!

887 AnonymousAnonymousNYUSThis whole policy encompases the idea of the phrase "life's unfair." Those who make the statement and live by it ignore the fact that they, themselves have the aility to make life fair, or at least more fair. This policy is horrible and is both a short term and long term step in the wrong direction.

894 maggiemckemieMAUSThe School of Management is particularly harsh about grading. I received an A+ to a B+ on the tests, which could not be graded subjectively. However, I received F's to B-'s and no higher on things such as presentations and writing assignments. The grades I received on such assignments never once reflected the hard work and extraordinary effort that I put invested in them.
