who struggles with a 2.8 grade average. She will not qualify for grad school or internships. Why would anyone pay for this abuse? If I were paying full price I would be up in arms. She is discouaged and complains of the poor quality of many of the professors in her field (accounting). At our local university she is an A student. All her friends complain as well. It is so very incorrect. |

Richard | Owens | PA | US | As a parent this deflation system is quite troubling. Our soph. son has a 3.7 and needs to keep it up not only to maintain his merit scholarship but also because he may be interested in law school. There have been a few classes were he expected an A based on grading throughout the semester only to find he received a B+ or A-at the end. This reputation is turning off many of the high achievers that BU is trying to attract since the college admission message boards are full of references to the BU deflation reputation. It hurts BU graduates when they apply to grad school or law school and this in turn hurts BU. Our son had to drop out of one class because of fears it would pull down his GPA to below the threshold to keep his merit aid. He would have liked to take the risk but since he could not be certain if his other grades would be deflated he had to drop the class. He atended a BU Spain program the summer after Freshman year and got two B+s which is normally fine since he is not a Spanish major, however, he had several friends choose not to go on a summer abroad trip because of fears that the overall deflation left them so that they were afraid to chance such an experience since they coudn't afford to get a B only because their other regular classes were so uncertain due to deflation fears. It makes no sense for it to be harder to get an A at BU then at PENN. If a specific Professor is of such a high quality that he/she brings out the best in students so that there are many more As then so be it. Why should kids be punished for doing their best? If half the kids deserve an A then they should get an A. Its time for the administration to swing the pendulum back to where it belongs.

I have never earned so much as anything below a B+ in my entire life, and now I have two C's. I transferred in with a 3.9 from another school and a 4.0 out of my high school. I scored 1550 on the SAT and 36 on the ACT... a 2.9 for me?????????????? |

MaryBeth | Underwood | FL | US | My best friend has not slept in 3 days because she has been studying nonstop for her exams. And what has come of this studying? Poor grades. She is an extremely determined and intelligent woman and I do not believe that her grades are reflecting this, not because of lack of effort, but because of the ridiculous grading policy that is being used at Boston University.
Anonymous | Anonymous | | CN | I am an admitted international student. I am very concerned with this news despite my love for BU. Please make BU a place closer to perfection by adopting a more standardized Grading Policy.I first realized this policy on wikipedia.

Anonymous | Anonymous | CO | US | I will be attending BU next year, and I know I am going to be working tremendously hard because I want to become a doctor and attend a great med school. We all know that for med school you need grades and MCATs. If BU cannot provide the grades to students after their hard work, then whats the poing? Why not go to a state university and easily get the grades you need after putting in effort. Not only will this boost your moral, but it will also improve the image of your university since you attended a fine graduate school. If this grade deflation problem cannot be solved quickly, I will look into withdrawing my deposit. So well for the money I lost, atleast I could get into my top med school.

Anonymous | Anonymous | IN | US | As the parent of a very bright man that scored 1530+ on his SAT and carried a contact 3.75-3.85 GPA in high school, I am very, very disappointed after his first year at BU. He is there on a merit scholarship but risks losing it because he is .11 away from the GPA he needs to keep the scholarship. It this grade deflation is known by so many, why isn't something being done about it. I am extremely frustrated and I know my son is as well. It does't matter how hard he works, how much he studies, he is not getting the grades he truly deserves!

ralph | andreotti | NY | US | My daughter just completed her freshman year at BU and we were just notified that she lost her scholarship. Her final grades were B,B-,B+ & C (Writing) she failed to maintain a 3.0 GPA. During the course of freshman year she requested help and guidance from her professor in her writing class. She didnot receive any consideration or help from him and as a result she lost her scholarship by receiving a C in his class. If I was aware of BU's grade deflation policy prior to her admission to BU. I would have had issues with her acceptance to BU.As a result of this we are considering having her withdraw BU. She was awarded numerous scholarships from several highly rated schools. As a parent I'm extremly conserned and disappointed in BU's grade policy I feel its not fair to the present students. When students submit resumes or apply to graduate porgrams they will be at a disadvantage compared to students at comparable universities.due to their lower GPA'S.
Thomas | Eklund | | UK | Both the inflation and deflation of grades damages their worth. How can one understand what a grade means if it is so different from other grade-issuing institutions?

Anonymous | Anonymous | AL | US | I'm paying $43000 for a garbage degree. Boston University is just too populous to make it an elite top-10 school. All that money, sweat, and tears just to stand in the unemployment line upon graduation. Well at least we have the best campus food in a nation!
