We sign this Petition in strong opposition to attempts by Wyeth to deprive American women the freedom to choose natural solutions in maintaining their health.
We, the undersigned, support medical freedom of choice which includes maintaining access to Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)—a personalized, more natural approach to hormone replacement therapy. Maintaining the freedom to choose BHRT is essential because the synthetic non-identical hormone drug products, Premarin and Prempro, which Wyeth has mass-marketed to menopausal women, have been linked to increased risks of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.
Specifically, we are concerned because of the following:
•The FDA has received a petition from Wyeth, a major pharmaceutical company, that is seeking to restrict and deny Americans the freedom to make individualized health choices such as BHRT; and
•Members of Congress are being courted by Wyeth to deny Americans’ the access to BHRT and other natural health care choices.
We join Project: FANS in demanding that the FDA, Congress and the Administration take a stand on behalf of American citizens’ freedoms and protect access to BHRT by taking the following actions:
•Rejecting Wyeth’s deceptive “citizen’s complaint,”
•Focusing the FDA’s regulatory control on pharmaceutical products that are known to pose significant health risks to users, such as Premarin and Prempro, the only hormone therapy that has been proven dangerous to women, and
•Resisting the overtures of greedy pharmaceutical company lobbyists to enact legislation that would effectively ban BHRT through the over-regulation of compounding pharmacy, the method by which bio-identical hormones are prepared.
Our government must demonstrate that it will always ensure and protect the individual freedom of health choices for Americans rather than protecting the profits of the pharmaceutical industry.
Signed,

Why Protecting Access to Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy (BHRT) is Important
BHRT is the effective and natural alternative to synthetic non-identical hormones for women.
Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, clearly demonstrated a link between the usage of Premarin and Prempro, which Wyeth mass-marketed to menopausal women, and significant adverse effects, including increased risks of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.
With the patenting of non-identical hormones, which are drugs that mimic naturally occurring hormones, and the mass marketing of one-size-fits-all products, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) became a big profit maker for Wyeth and other companies. After the WHI results were published, women discovered that they were at increased risks for serious adverse effects and the sales of Premarin and Prempro, as well as other HRT, plummeted. The citizen’s petition submitted to the FDA by Wyeth is an attempt to regain market share by restricting access to BHRT, which the drug companies have described as their “competition.”
BHRT:
•Bio-identical hormones are hormones which have the same structure and action as the hormones produced in our bodies. Bio-identical hormones are a personalized health care option—appropriately tailored to meet and treat the exact medical needs of an individual;
•Bio-identical hormones provide an alternative to Premarin and Prempro and other conventional HRT which place women at an increased risk for breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots;
•Bio-identical hormones can only be obtained from a compounding pharmacy after a patient has consulted with a licensed physician or medical practitioner and a prescription is given. This ensures the cooperation among the practitioner, patient and pharmacist in developing the individual’s best health care strategy;
•Bio-identical hormones are prepared by compounding pharmacies that are strictly regulated and reviewed at the state level consistent with the constitutionally provided and protected state regulation of the medical and pharmacy professions; and
•Bio-identical hormones are compounded from ingredients purchased from facilities registered with the FDA.
In keeping with our country’s founding principles, the opportunity for increased corporate profits can never be allowed to undermine the personal choice in health care of any type, especially BHRT. Currently, there are sufficient and effective regulations at the state level regarding the practice of medicine and compounding pharmacy.
Too often the unintended consequences of government action chip away at Americans’ freedoms. In this instance, Wyeth’s complaint, if adopted by the FDA, would eliminate individualized health options for women and severely restrict physicians’ choices in recommending natural, alternative treatments.
By signing this petition you are declaring your support of the following:
•Project: FANS’ position that elected officials are in office to represent the individuals of this nation and are responsible for protecting individual freedom and liberty.
•Project: FANS’ position that both the Executive and Legislative branches of our government must protect the freedom of Americans, especially women, to work in partnership with their physician in exploring alternative, natural solutions for their health problems, specifically by allowing them to have full access to Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Note: Project: F.A.N.S. will be utilizing this grassroots tool in support of our efforts with the FDA, Congress and the White House to protect natural solutions to health care and wellness. Please share this petition with your friends, family and coworkers so that our voices may be strong in Washington, DC. |

In this efforts, Project: FANS calls upon:
•The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reject any petition or request which may infringe upon access to BHRT and other natural solutions to wellness; and
•The United States Congress to protect Americans’ freedom to access BHRT and natural solutions to wellness. We call upon Congress to preserve and protect states’ rights in the regulation of the practice of medicine and pharmacy. Certain members of Congress are attempting to usurp the states’ constitutional rights to govern medicine and pharmacy, by attempting to have compounding pharmacies that provide BHRT placed under the jurisdiction of the federal government. We call upon Congress to uphold the U.S. Constitution’s limitations on the ability of the federal government to encroach upon the states’ rights to govern the practice of medicine and pharmacy. |
