Lena's Exit from All My Children Bittersweet

It's not very often that three little words can make such a difference to so many people, but for many All My Children fans, there was nothing sweeter than finally hearing Bianca Montgomery say “I love you” to Lena Kundera on Wednesday, April 28.
Dynamic change, especially that which challenges the status quo, usually happens one step at a time, and television is no exception. As viewers, however, it’s often hard to sit back and enjoy the small victories when they feel like crumbs, but on the occasion of Lena's final episode on All My Children, we have plenty of reason to celebrate: the first lesbian couple on daytime television, All My Children’s Lena (Olga Sosnovska) and Bianca (Eden Riegel) finally found their way back to each other. Unfortunately, that day also marked Olga’s last appearance on AMC--she’s left Pine Valley behind for London and a lead role in the stylish BBC spy series Spooks (shown here on A&E as MI-5).
The significance of the Bianca-Lena storyline went far beyond the scripted lines: it was the first time lesbian and bisexual women had a soap couple they could call their own. We had two incredibly talented actresses whose on-screen chemistry made this couple acceptable and even attractive to a wide range of viewers, regardless of sexual orientation. Lena and Bianca’s story was a chance for All My Children to send a positive message to society that love in all it’s forms was indeed worth fighting for.
But in the year since daytime television’s first same-sex kiss, the viewers have continually been let down as the writers and producers have failed to treat Lena and Bianca with the same respect as any other couple on AMC. After enduring 9 months of broken promises for a reunited Lena and Bianca, and threats of a triangle with Bianca’s best friend Maggie, fans of the couple were praying that the show would do right by them and give Lena a proper exit from the show. Would the writers kill off Olga’s character as part of the elaborate and over-blown baby-switch story, or simply make her disappear, as have several other recently departed characters on AMC?
Lianca fans wanted their journey to end with the dignity and love that this ground-breaking couple deserved. For Bianca to declare her love, for the couple to finally be allowed a few moments of happiness, and for the door to be left open for Lena’s possible return (Olga Sosnovska was recently quoted as saying that she’d be willing to come back, if she’s available after filming in London is completed later this summer, and Eden Riegel has just signed on to continue her role as Bianca through the middle of 2006).
Surprisingly, we got what we asked for: Olga and Eden with their extraordinary chemistry gave us an amazing episode with a romantic and tearful good-bye. Bianca finally (for the very first time) said, “I love you,” and accepted Lena’s commitment ring, and her vow to wait for Lena’s return was sealed with a tender kiss. Then, at Bianca’s urging and the promise of a future with the love of her life, Lena left to take her sick mother home to Poland, with Bianca's last words ringing in her ears: “Come back to me when you can."
After a nearly a year’s worth of complaints that Lena and Bianca weren’t being given the same consideration and treatment as the other heterosexual couples, thanks should be given to the producers and writers of All My Children. This week they gave us what few soap couples ever receive: a dignified and open ending. Let’s hope they’ll keep the promise of a future for Lena and Bianca, and give us the return of a strong, out, and proud Bianca Montgomery.

It was really nice to have BAM back early 2007 but I think I speak for the many BAM fans out there who want Bianca and Maggie back full time! I don't think that it was appropriate to leave BAM fans hanging wondering if Bianca and Maggie will get back together or not...WE NEED TO SEE THE CONCLUSION....for nothing else but for PEACE OF MIND!!
I may add it would be nice to see Bianca and Maggie's relationship full fledged full time as opposed to having to imagine what their relationship must be like offscreen in our imaginations because it takes place in Paris rather than in PV.
That's my opinion and I am a hard core BAM fan therefore I know that I definitely speak for others as well. |
