After residing in the US for over five years, Rahman Asadollahi--world-renown Azerbaijani garmon player and human rights activist--applied for asylum through the US government. He has been an outspoken advocate of Southern Azerbaijani cultural and political rights in Iran for over 25 years and has been exiled since the mid-'80s. His criticism of the Iranian government's ethno-centric policies has not been taken lightly by the current regime and because of this Mr. Asadollahi believes that returning to Iran could jeopardize he and his wife's lives, not to mention his artistic career.
Having resided in Germany prior to living in the US, Mr. Asadollahi stated this in his asylum application. Government officials have accused Mr. Asadollahi of lying stating that his previous country of residence was Iran, though he wrote Germany. His deportation threat is based on this very minor misunderstanding.
On January 18, 2006 Mr. and Mrs. Asadollahi will appear before a federal immigration judge in order to plead for asylum. Please sign this petition in support of Mr. and Mrs. Asadollahi's asylum. |
