The undersigned wish to advocate for the blind and visually impaired who feel that not enough attention or emphasis publically has been made to assist and aid in the quality of life for those who are visually impaired. Thousands of visually impaired people in Florida and across the nation are not easily recognized as disabled because their disability is not “visible.” Many visually impaired people must deal with overwhelming difficulties in their daily life. However, just a few small changes can be made to alleviate some of the frustrations felt by the blind and visually impaired and help improve their quality of life. If you feel that we have made a legitimate case for our cause please sign this petition. Listed below is some of the problems visually impaired people encounter on a daily basis:
Example 1: Public/Weather alerts and warnings consist of audible beeps; however, the message is written on a crawl that is not audible therefore not being heard by the visually impaired listener. Another aspect of this issue is phone numbers or addresses being displayed on the screen yet non-verbal for those who can’t see them.
Example 2: Automated telephone systems which request the caller to enter phone numbers, account numbers, etc. can not easily be accomplished in the timely manner required. We are not asking that every automated system comply with this request but feel that the media, local, state, and federal agencies should offer this assistance to their visually impaired citizens.
Example 3: Two of the larger retailers in the country, Wal-Mart and Kmart do provide non-motorized wheelchairs to allow visually impaired customers “with assistance” to traverse their store.
The vast majority of visually impaired people in Florida and across the Nation want to retain as much independence as possible. If some of the concerns listed above were taken into consideration it would significantly improve the quality of life for all those concerned. We are not by any means asking for a hand out we are merely asking for a hand up. |
