We, the undersigned, ask that candidates for Governor of the State of New York,
• Publicly disavow the 8th grade education standard put forth by the Appellate Division and state that all New York students are entitled to a high school diploma that prepares them for a decent job and citizenship in the 21st Century.
• Support a costing-out effort to ascertain the actual costs of delivering a sound basic education around the state, and implement its findings by September 2003.
• Substantially increase funding for those programs that have been proven to work, including smaller classes; qualified teachers; safe, un-crowded and technologically up-to-date school facilities, and universal access to pre-Kindergarten.
Only if all of the state’s children are given these educational opportunities will they have a fair chance to succeed in school and later in life. |
