Dear
Councilman Bothwell,
I’m
writing to discuss the rezoning of the old Naval Reserve site on Larchmont Road.
I apologize in advance for this long letter, but I’m holding out hope that
you’ll be persuaded by reason.
By way of introduction, I am a
career social worker having about 36 years of experience in the profession. In
addition to having worked with at-risk children, handicapped adults, and low
income families, my background also includes the following volunteer activities:

Dear Mayor Bellamy,
My husband and I have lived in our home on Edgewood Rd. for 20 years. We are
both health professionals. Some of our immediate neighbors include nurses,
teachers, a social worker, a county employee, and retirees. We have learned this
is the population MHO provides affordable housing for. If our cohort can catch a
break where quality housing is concerned, this is great! We support affordable
housing. We oppose the density of this project, as it has been proposed for this
particular site.
MHO and the City would have us believe that many of the residents of the
proposed Larchmont 60 apartments will not have cars and will walk or use public
transportation! This is work force housing, yes? How many truck
drivers, laborers, or movers do not have cars? If you are a nurse's aid or an
RN, where are you going to walk to get to work on Merrimon Ave.? And if you do
catch the once per hour bus, the soonest you could...

February 22, 2010To the Editor:With this letter, we join more than two hundred and fifty residents of the Gracelyn subdivision and surrounding neighborhoods in North Asheville to protest the proposed rezoning of the Naval Reserve site behind the Grace Post Office on Merrimon Avenue. This rezoning would be necessary in order for Mountain Housing Opportunities, L.L.C.(MHO) to build the sixty-unit, high density, affordable housing complex it has proposed for the site. The concerns of this diverse group are not about MHO which does important work and has a good reputation. Moreover, the great majority of the petitioners support affordable housing, not just in principle but for the neighborhood. Were the thirty-two units allowed under current zoning to go on the site, most of the petitioners would welcome the development. Our and our neighbors' principle concerns about the proposed rezoning are two fold: First, the density that would result if the rezoning request...

Re: The Larchmont ProjectDear Ms. Manheimer:I am a resident of Asheville, living at 62 Edgewood Road. I have lived in the north Asheville area for 65 years, and I have lived at my present address for 25 years.I am very much opposed to the rezoning required for the proposed MHO Larchmont project. The reasons that I have for opposing this project go far beyond what I am able briefly include in this letter, so I have attached a copy of a letter which I delivered to Julia Cogburn and a copy of a memorandum which I prepared and handed out at the TRC hearing. The reason that I am writing this letter to you, in your capacity as a member of the City Council, is that during and after the hearing at TRC it became apparent that City Staff was entirely in support of the project and that issues presented in opposition to the project, as it has been proposed, were not likely to be seriously considered until the matter reaches City Council. This is not to summarily dismiss the hearing scheduled at...
