Name: Clay Carmichael on Aug 6, 2008Comments: We cannot tolerate being last in the nation especially in light of being one of the top performing districts. I interact with 1500 children everyday ; telling them "no fieldtrips, no school nurse to help you with your illness/injury, no transportation to take you home after your after tutoring.sporting events, club meetings, no funding for art classes etc..." is so incredibly disheartening. We, educators in SJCSD, will toughen up and weather todays economics. We only ask that State goverment make education a TRUE priority.Flag

Name: Lisa Tinnerman on Aug 6, 2008Comments: It is a disgrace what is going on with funding to our schools. I am not absolutely convinced public schools is the way to go, very interested in a voucher program, believe competition breeds excellence. I am concerned we are not teaching, but babysitting....too much disruption in classrooms, average and above average kids are being dumb down at the expense of special needs kids....we need future leaders, not a bunch of kids with mediocre education....special needs to be in a separate classroom where their needs can be met not at the expense of other children. I also believe St. Johns County is doing ok....not great...and I get a bit aggravated with everyone toting how great our schools are when we are in 50th place in the nation and comparing ourselves to other areas in the state which are way below par. Give the money to the parents to choose where we want to send our kids, public or private or parochial....I want to do want is best for my children...the state is not doing a good job at all.Flag

Shows where your priorities are. That being said, I do hope that we - as a State - will begin to seriously address the problems with our schools as quickly as possible.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Aug 6, 2008Comments: As the daughter of a Duval County public school teacher (now retired) who had to march and unionize for a living wage back in the 60's, and who had to buy her own classroom supplies in the 1970's, I am apalled that things have only gotten worse. My own children struggled to get through the putrid system in the 1980's and 90's. There is so much waste! Such poor decisions! Instead of educating kids, the "educators" (NOT the teachers: the people in the top-heavy admin. system) follow every silly fad that comes down the pike and turn out high school graduates who can neither read nor write, much less do simple mathematics. We are a national disgrace. I do not pretend to have the answers to this muddle. All I know is that a huge percentage of our young people are not ready for college or to ply a trade, as they are functional (more or less) illiterates.Flag

None of this makes sense to me. I want my sons to receive the best education that they are entitled to by my taxes being paid.Flag
