Although the entire seventh season of 24 will be completed by late summer or early fall, Fox will likely wait until January 2009 to air the season. The reasoning behind this decision is that 24 works better when aired in a non-stop format.
Although the non-stop format (and the 4 hour premieres for seasons 4-6) is enjoyable, the show has also performed well when not aired in the manner. Seasons 2-3 finished off stronger than season 6, despite not having been aired non-stop.
Because of the writer's strike, there should be special circumstances for the airing of season 7. The show could easily return following the world series, air 8 episodes before the holidays and then air the final 16 over 16 consecutive weeks starting in January. This earlier return would benefit Fox, which does not have American Idol on its fall schedule. And the format would be almost non-stop, just with a 3-4 week gap between episodes 8 and 9.
At this point, getting the show back on the air before 2009 is more important than preserving the show's non-stop airing format.
