Build the Beloved Community. Support Humane Immigration Policies.

"The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God" (Leviticus 19:34).

Greetings to all who came from near and far to be renewed in your work to bring holistic healing to our urban communities last week. I hope we will have many opportunities to support one another’s work in the two years before the next Congress on Urban Ministry. I pray that the people you met, the tools that you picked up, and the spiritual renewal you encountered last week will transform your work as you make it back to your respective cities and get back to the work of healing and transformation.

One of our brothers at this year’s Congress, Sergio Juarez from East Los Angeles, needs your help. He’s petitioned an audience with the President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, to convince him to use his power as president to advocate on behalf of the millions of Mexicans living and working on this side of the Rio Grande. Sergio would like to go to his meeting with President Fox with pages and pages of signatures from people who believe that further militarizing our border with Mexico, and threatening arrest to any who would dare stand in solidarity with an “undocumented” human being, is NOT in line with our Christian faith and values, or our vision of the Beloved Community where all are welcomed and cared for.

Add your name to this petition and pass this along to others who believe the US should deal with immigration thoughtfully, humanely and in the spirit of the Beloved Community.

In Peace & Justice,

2006 Congress on Urban Ministry

Dear Sr. President Fox & First-lady of Mexico, Sra. Martha Sahagún de Fox,

We the gathered people of the Congress on Urban Ministry are in opposition to the changes in US immigration policy as proposed in HR-4437. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who find themselves in a state of distress due to the proposed changes to the immigration law of the United States. We ask that you join our group that represents urban churches and faith-based organizations in opposition to HR-4437, which we find to be an affront to our Christian understanding of “loving our neighbor as we love ourselves.” We ask that you do everything in your power to block the passage of this would be law.

In addition to many other results this law would have on the state of our nation and world if passed, HR-4437 would: break families apart (“illegal” parents would be torn away from their “legal” children), further polarize the US from our neighbors to the south, and it would make it a crime for us to express Christian love for our neighbors if they happen to not have proper documentation in the US.

We ask respectfully that you support our cause and stand in solidarity for immigration laws that uphold the humanity of immigrants and take into consideration the much larger socio-economic realities that push people out of their homelands in the first place.

Sincerely Yours,
