Name: Kathy Wells Calhoun on Nov 12, 2010Comments: Families of slain officers seek Purple Heart By Hema Easley - The (Westchester, N.Y.) Journal News Posted : Tuesday Oct 26, 2010 19:39:00 EDT WESTCHESTER, N.Y. — The families of two slain Army officers have started a signature campaign to have the Purple Heart awarded to the officers posthumously. Previous requests by the widows and families of the two men have been denied because the Army said they were not killed in combat. Capt. Phillip Esposito of Suffern and 1st Lt. Louis Allen of Milford, Pa., were killed in an explosion at an Army post in Tikrit, Iraq, in June 2005. The military initially said their deaths resulted from an enemy mortar attack, but it soon began an internal criminal investigation. The Army charged Alberto Martinez of Troy, N.Y., a sergeant in their unit, with two counts of premeditated murder. The officers’ deaths were considered by the military to be the first fragging incidents since the beginning of the war in Iraq. Fragging is military slang for intentionally killing an officer. But a military court acquitted Martinez after a court martial in the fall of 2008, during which some witnesses testified that they heard Martinez make death threats against Esposito and saw him in suspicious circumstances near the explosion site. The Army has not pursued another suspect.Flag

Their bravery and sacrifice should not go without ceremony. They both deserve to be honored as the heroes that they are and not be overlooked because of some political game. RIP 1st Lt. Louis Allen and Captain Phillip Esposito, May the world find out how brave you were and the sacrifices you made. May G-d watch over your families!Flag
