Name: Kim McGuire on May 3, 2012Comments: When I spoke with Mr. Caravela in Aug 2011 regarding my concerns with the size of my daughter's Kindergarten class, he told me that in 1st grade the class size would go down to 18-19 and then back up again in second grade. Based on this conversation, I trusted that the 4th 1st grade section would remain there for the 2012/2013 school year. I am a strong supporter of Mr. Caravela. At the same time, I am extremely disappointed in his current decision to move the 4th section to the 2nd grade next year.Flag

Name: Pamela Barton on May 3, 2012Comments: First grade is such a critical year for our kids. They just aren't going to benefit as well from the whole academic experience if the teacher has 7-8 extra kids in the classroom. It really isn't fair to the current kindergarten classes that they will once again be in an over crowded classroom for the second year in a row.Flag

Name: Ted Bongiovanni on May 3, 2012Comments: I'm deeply concerned about class size, but would like to see a solution that doesn't pit one class against another. Here's an idea: We the undersigned parents of Linden Avenue School kindergartners are deeply concerned about increasing class sizes. This year's class may have has many as 25 students per class--and the number of teacher aides is uncertain. Research shows that kids learn better when they get more individual attention. In addition, the move from kindergarten to first grade requires students to take on many new responsibilities. We ask to be treated fairly. The 2012-13 first grade class should be closer in size to the current first grade class, which has between 18 and 20 students. By signing this petition, we request that Superintendent Mucciolo and the Glen Ridge board devise a creative solution to meet this goal and keep first grade class sizes smaller.Flag
