In spite of confirmations of cross-party support in the Houses of Parliament, the culture sector and the defence establishment, the UK remains the only G20 nation not to have ratified the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in Armed Conflict.
As well as undermining efforts to constrain the global trade in stolen cultural artefacts and antiquities, the failure to ratify sends a negative message which undermines the UK's worldwide diplomatic effort.
