Name: Kim Kendrick on Apr 1, 2010Comments: Laying off -any-, much less a large number, of police officers and firefighters is an obvious safety issue in any city. Crime rates usually go up in an unsteady economy because people will do drastic things for money ... things that endanger the rest of the public. I think the great minds proposing these changes will feel differently when someone is robbing THEIR house. As the daughter of a firefighter, I've seen first hand how many lives can be saved by ONE firefighter, much less 18. Please look long and hard at "overspending" in the budget and start there ... please reconsider these proposed actions.Flag

Name: Shelby Grayson on Apr 1, 2010Comments: I think that layoffs are a last resort and the city was able to find a way to fix this problem a couple months ago and that there is no reason to frighten people that layoffs are a possibility again. My mother is a saratoga springs police officer and she doesn't deserve to go through with it againFlag

Our policemen and firemen clearly do a superior job and the reputation enjoyed by Saratoga Springs is directly connected to their work. Just look around at neighboring municipalities for proof.Flag

Name: Richard D. Evertsen on Apr 1, 2010Comments: It seems to me that the city would be better served by proper budgeting and allocation of resources than continually thrreatening to lay off public safety workers. The constant threat of job loss can only lead to a state of morale that becomes so low that recovery may be impossible. A police department can only withstand so much political posturing by inept elected officials more concerned with their own personal agendas than ensuring a safe environment for the citizens who put them in power in the first place.Flag

I do not understand you want to lay off officers, but you will pay OT to others as I am sure you have to have minimum staffing..... does not make much sense to myself!Flag
