There is nothing heroic in that.Flag

Name: Ron Kills Plenty Luneau on Jan 5, 2013Comments: I am of Lakota descent so this directly effects me. I've been to Wounded Knee many times, have heard the stories, seen the hurt. I am also a vet and was stationed at Ft Riley with the 1st Infantry Division and every time I had to go to the main post (leave Custer Hill) I would pass by this large monument honoring those who killed some of my ancestors, it was extremely difficult. Knowing most of the true events that happened that day, I cannot imagine as a vet that the Medal of Honor was ever intended for this purpose. Please restore some honor to this award and please show some humanity towards a people, my people who suffered there and those of us who have served honorably in later defense of our Country by correcting this error. Thank youFlag

Name: Susan Welby on Jan 6, 2013Comments: As a child in the 1950's, hero's in the history books were men like Custer. My GGGrandfather, John Stanage of Yankton, Dakota Territory had many native friends whom he treated kindly and respected. In turn, they saw him as a good friend. In the 1970's, I began seeing my hero's as cowards and given the era in time, it was a time of unforgiveable acts on both sides. There were also great men on both sides as well as those who I am sure that God could not forgive and sentenced them to a greater punishment then man could ever inflict to those so deserving of it. I stand on the side of the Native American in their demand of an apology to the unfairness of the white mans greed and sins against them in the time long past and all offenders as well as the innocent on both sides are all now dead. I believe this to be a time of healing for the innocent people of both sides to find a peace today. There is no honor for America to include the Battle Pennant on the Flag of the US Army or anywhere else to represent the Massacre at Wounded Knee which is still defended by the army as a battle. America knows the truth of that day now and the soldier should not be honored for that deed they inflicted upon the Native Men, Women and Childern. Give those pennants to the Native Americans so they can do with as they feel appropriate and let us as Americans bestow a proper appology so long overdue the the descendents of the dead. The medals given to the 23 soldiers should have no meaning other then shame. They know the cowardness of their actions on that day. It was the US Army that fell the soldiers in friendly fire as the millitary reacted badly to a shot in the air. Hatred and greed ruled that day. If Government does not acknowledge we made a mistake; correct that mistake; then nothing was learned from the taking of innocent lives. To my Native American Friends, I offer my appologies and offer to stand with you in your quest to get the United States to recind the medals from the 23 soldiers and correct the pages of history. I honor those in the past and pray we can give them the respect they have so long deserved; and for us living today, the courage to acknowledge the truth with the ability to do the right thing. The Government needs to quit denying and covering up the past. It makes us look as bad as those who lived in that era. I am grateful for the truth. It is the only way to understand us as a people today. Please keep me informed if I may be of any assistance. In my prayers and my heart, A friend always, Susan WelbyFlag
