I would like to see open burning stopped within the public water and sewer lines in Independence Township, Michigan.

     The State of Michigan, the EPA and the Township agree that the burning of leaves and yard waste is a health hazard, causes pollution and is a public nuisance. And yet, there is a township ordinance that allows this practice to continue.

     Leaf burning produces particulate matter and hydrocarbons, which contain a number of toxins, irritants, and carcinogenic (cancer-causing) compounds. Leaf smoke also contains carbon monoxide.

     Most homes in Clarkston are too close together for this burning to occur without affecting neighbors in surrounding homes. My health problems are extreme. The smoke causes me to go into anaphylactic shock. This causes my throat to swell shut and my blood pressure to drop. It is LIFE THREATENING for me. Please support me in getting this ordinance overturned.
