I respectfully call upon South Carolina and Charleston County officials to reject a request for the rezoning and development of historic Morris Island. The 62-acre luxury home development proposed by Harry Huffman would irreparably harm an irreplaceable part of South Carolina’s heritage.
Morris Island is best known as the site of one of the most deadly sieges of the American Civil War. For two months, the island was a bloody battleground as Union troops tried to capture the Confederate bastion of Fort Wagner. The island was also the site of the immortal charge of the 54th Massachusetts, one of the first African American regiments in the United States Army.
In addition to its Civil War history, Morris Island is a beautiful sanctuary for wildlife, especially migratory birds. Development of the island will likely cause severe erosion to nearby Folly Beach.
Morris Island is truly a national treasure. It belongs to all Americans, and I entreat you to keep this in mind as you deliberate its future. Thank you. |
