They violate the latter clause when students are required to participate in a religious practice that conflicts with their own religion. The current popularity of using Eastern/occult/New Age spiritual practices for physical and psychological purposes does not justify overlooking their religious nature, and it is up to our elected officials to uphold these basic constitutional principles. It is time for the double standard to end that excludes Christian practices such as prayer from the public arena while permitting New Age/Eastern practices such as yoga, meditation, and energy balancing.
