In a sixteen year career with the Washington Redskins, the New York Jets, and the Philadelphia Eagles, Art Monk was one of the premier wide receivers in football. The first man to ever catch more than 100 balls in a season (106, in 1984), Art retired in 1995 with a then-record 940 career receptions, and a then-record 183 game streak with at least one reception. He is currently fifth all-time in number of receptions, and ninth all-time in receiving yards.
Induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the greatest honor that can be bestowed upon a football player. Art Monk's statistics show him to be worthy of such an honor, but statistics only tell part of the tale. A tireless worker and consumate professional, Art Monk did the things on the football field that are difficult to quantify. He was an exceptional blocker for a wide receiver. The majority of his receptions came across the middle of the field, putting him in greater physical jeopardy than many other receivers who have gained induction. He did this without complaint, maintaining a quiet dignity that is unheard of in this modern time.
Art Monk has been eligible for induction since 2000. His absence lessens that institution. Do what is right for Art Monk, for his fans and for football itself. |
