The Halifax Regional Municipality has decided to close the doors on the Khyber Club, even earlier than the expected February 19th deadline. This news comes as a major disappointment to the proposed Khyber Performing Arts Society (KPAS) who are in the process of incorporating as a non-profit society for the express purpose of keeping the Khyber Club alive.
The Khyber Club is more than a bar for many of us. As it has been part of the Khyber Arts Society until now, it has a strong history of presenting interesting and progressive programming. The Khyber Club has played a vital role in our community, showing new and independent music, theatre, performance art, artists’ presentations, and film and video screenings. It has been a vibrant cultural hub, a place for artists to experiment and collaborate, and for a diverse audience to congregate, appreciate and discuss.
The Khyber Performing Arts Society wishes to uphold and advance the quality of programming presented in the club, retain an active membership, and utilize a percentage of sales for capital improvements to the performance venue.
KPAS, with the interim assistance of the Khyber Arts Society (KAS) hope for HRM to extend the current lease between KAS and HRM, until such time when KPAS can enter into a lease agreement with city management. KPAS proposes a deadline of March 31 for this extension, at which point the Society will be formed, the club’s liquor license obtained and a membership established.
In the light of HRM's draft Cultural Plan, and how the Khyber Club currently fulfils many of the mandates outlined in that Plan,
We the undersigned urge the Municipality to overturn the current ruling to lock the Khyber Club, and support the efforts of the proposed Khyber Performing Arts Society. |
